beard-a-thon

so jon and i just shaved last night for the last time for at least 7 months...which is from today(9/1/08) to april 6, 2009. that's about 210 days of unrazored facial skin... all in the hopes of raising some funds to build a water well for a village in need in africa.

we'll be posting new picture updates of our beard development on our website here:

we're having a big kick-off bbq today to officially begin our quest to get a well built. hopefully we'll have some new pledgers sign up or at least have some of our brethren join us in support and solidarity of this endeavor by growing their beards along w/ us...

currently our canvases are blank; in 7 months, we hope the outrageous beard growth we attain will be representative of the gift of some fresh, clean drinking water.

Why?

Beards for Tears is a beard-a-thon for the purpose of building a well. On September 1, 2008, Greg Miller and Jon Sontag will begin growing their beards. With your weekly pledges and donations, Greg and Jon will have enough money to build a well after a seven month commitment to facial hair.

Water Wells for Africa is a non-profit originally conceived by members of the Breakwater Church in Manhattan Beach, CA. almost a decade ago. We are answering the cries of our needy neighbors in Malawi, Africa by bringing them clean drinking water. We raise funds to install water wells that serve many families. The clean water dramatically reduces new occurrence of disease and provides resources for micro-farming. Less disease and more food means healthier children and more productive adults… changed lives. Since 1996 we have funded over 90 water wells and have impacted the lives of over 150,000 people.

Simply put, Greg and Jon have 31 weeks to raise enough money to build a well ($6000). $2 a week from at least 100 people will make this a reality. On April 6, 2009, Beards for Tears will send your donations to Water Wells for Africa, giving a village access to clean drinking water.
